Company Background

CWH (Clark Woodward Hungate & Co Limited) is one of the UK’s largest independent firms of surveyors and loss adjusters, specialising in investigations for insurers underwriting marine cargo, freight forwarding, and transit liability risks. We are also retained by private companies operating in shipping and commerce. 

Our History 

Founded in 1978 by Reg Clark, Trevor Woodward, and Bob Hungate, the company initially focused on marine cargo claims involving commodities such as coffee, sugar, timber, steel, and meat. Recognising the evolving logistics landscape, CWH quickly became a market leader in roll-on/roll-off claims, particularly under the CMR Convention. 

Following a management buyout in February 2011 by Rod Davis, Eirian Williams, and Nigel Midwood, CWH expanded its service offering and now operates from offices in Ipswich, Dartford, Leeds, Manchester, and Birmingham, supported by partners throughout Europe and worldwide. Our reputation is built on technical proficiency, rapid response capabilities, and nationwide coverage within hours. 

Growth and Expansion 

While CWH’s team of experienced surveyors has grown across the UK, we continue to recruit both seasoned professionals and new talent for training and mentorship. 

Principals and Services 

Our Principals include UK and foreign insurers, Lloyd’s underwriters, and underwriting agents, as well as surveying companies worldwide. We provide pre-shipment inspections, security surveys, risk management investigations, marine cargo surveys, and transit liability loss adjusting services.

CWH is a founding corporate member of the British Association of Cargo Surveyors (BACS), and members of the Leeds and Manchester Marine Insurance Associations. We are approved to ISO 9001:2015 and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).
